A Guide to Diamond Cuts and Diamond Shapes

The cut and shape of a diamond determines its appearance and both are important factors to consider. The cut should always be perfectly balanced, with symmetrical mirror-like facets. The shape establishes how light is reflected and refracted through the stone, which determines its overall brilliance and luster. This Graff Guide provides further details regarding diamond cuts and shapes to ensure you have all the information you need when purchasing a diamond.

Selecting the perfect diamond cut

The shape of a diamond defines its radiant personality, with each carefully considered facet crafted by hand to reveal its innate splendor. Each cut is imbued with its own inimitable character and charm. A diamond engagement ring should capture the imagination and create a uniquely scintillating statement on the finger.

Round Brilliant Diamond

Round Brilliant Diamond

With 57 or 58 individually handcrafted facets that refract light from every angle, the eternally elegant round brilliant cut is designed for maximum luminosity. A sensational centerpiece in a single stone ring, each of our perfectly proportioned round brilliant cut diamonds offers the highest levels of fire and brilliance.

Emerald Cut Diamond

Rectangular or square, with beveled corners, the emerald cut is an exquisitely elegant diamond shape. While the mirror-like surface at the top of the stone accentuates its sleekly symmetrical proportions and long, clear facets, it exposes even the tiniest flaws. A stone of excellent quality is required to showcase this strikingly beautiful cut.

A timeless, highly sophisticated choice, the tapered silhouette is reminiscent of a teardrop. This cut is incredibly flattering for those with smaller hands as its asymmetric proportions elongate the finger.

An oval diamond, a variation of the round brilliant cut, perfectly balances enchanting radiance and contemporary classicism. A relatively recent addition to the diamond cutter’s repertoire and incredibly flattering for those with petite hands, its elongated shape is emphasized when accompanied by side stones.

The most romantic of all diamond cuts, a heart shape diamond requires incredible expertise and complete precision to create the gently rounded curves. It is identical in length across its widest point and from cleft to tip. A total of 59 facets radiate light outwards and provide sensational scintillation.

A timeless diamond cut, the softly rounded corners of a cushion cut stone strike the perfect balance between the geometric elegance of an emerald cut and the prismatic radiance of a round brilliant diamond.

How are diamonds cut?

The task of our master cutters and polishers requires astonishing skill, precision, and patience. With limitless passion and the steadiest of hands, they bring each stone to life, unlocking its exceptional beauty time after time.

Planning: Each rough diamond is carefully examined to determine the best way to cut it, considering its shape and size. Typically, the diamond cutter marks the stone with a series of lines to guide the cutting process.

Cleaving: The diamond is then cleaved using specialized tools such as a diamond saw or laser. Cleaving involves splitting the diamond along its natural planes, while sawing involves cutting a groove into it.

Bruting: Next, the diamond is shaped into a preliminary form, often round or oval. This is done by grinding the edges against a rotating wheel, a process known as bruting.

Faceting: Once the diamond is bruted, the cutter will facet the stone using grinding and polishing tools to create the desired shape and cut. This involves cutting and shaping the diamond's facets to maximize their brilliance. Each facet is a small, flat, polished surface arranged in a specific geometric pattern. The number and arrangement of facets are dependent upon the chosen diamond cut.

Polishing: Each facet is then polished. This time-intensive process ensures that each facet is precise and the angles are correct to maximize the beauty of the stone.

Final Cleaning: The diamond is cleaned to remove any remaining residue from the cutting and polishing process.

Final inspection: The diamond is then inspected and graded for quality based on additional criteria such as color, clarity, cut and carat weight.

Our diamond experts can guide you to help you understand the nuances of each cut and how it impacts a diamond’s overall appearance. Every Graff diamond is meticulously evaluated and assessed to ensure absolute perfection at every stage of a stone’s journey and according to the 4Cs as prescribed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
